Uganda’s ‘Bed Of Thorns’ Wins Big At London Art House Film Festival Awards

Ugandan film ‘Bed of Thorns’ emerged winner at the 2019 London Art House Film Festival.
The groundbreaking film that comprised of an all-female crew, a first in Uganda, was awarded the Best Africa Focus Film at the awards show that was attended by its director and producer Eleanor Nabwiiso alongside Mathew Nabwiiso.

Last week, ‘Bed of Thorns’ was screened at the annual festival in London that seeks to encourage new and emerging film producers and directors from around the world to tell stories and produce independent film that reflect their view and vision.

‘Bed of Thorns’ that features Martha Kay, Diana Kahunde, Malaika Nyanzi and Agnes Kebirungi, tackles Gender Based Violence and urges women to speak up about the vice that remains a major challenge.

According to the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, up to 22% of women aged 15 to 49 in the country had experienced some form of sexual violence. The report also revealed that annually, 13% of women aged 15 to 49 report experiencing sexual violence. This translates to more than 1 million women exposed to sexual violence every year in Uganda.
