Juliet Namujju, has been awarded a 2021 Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development award.
The Ugandan sustainable fashion designer and founder of Kimuli Fashionability, is among the 15 outstanding innovators from all parts of the Commonwealth that have been announced as winners of this year’s edition of the prestigious awards.
Juliet was recognized for her outstanding work at Kimuli Fashionability, a sustainable fashion label transforming the waste crisis in Africa into employment opportunities for disabled tailors by imparting creative skills training and ‘up-cycles’ waste materials, and blending them with African fabrics.
Announcing the incredible news to her followers through social media earlier this week, she said the award means a lot to the growth of the fashion label.
“This award gives our work the much needed visibility and credibility in the reputable networks that the @commonwealth_sec has…” Juliet wrote.
Juliet has previously been able to present her upcycled fashion at the Germany Bildkorrekturren Fair Fashion Conference 2017, won the Ugandan Ye-Community Award 2018, was a Tony Emelu Foundation Fellow for producing eco-friendly facemasks for the disabled, and was awarded winner of the ‘Global Greenpreneur Award 2019 by Ban-Ki-Moon.
